Sanjay Dutt and the word Jail seem to be synonymous with each other. He landed up in jail for some overzealous assistance he provided to a few close friends. This romantic hero, also had his personal life in doldrums during the same period. Though he is now cleared of serious charges and is awaiting clearance on relatively lesser crime of possession of arms, the past is taunting him in some form or the other.
There is a speculation that Madhur Bhandarkar’s present attempt “Jail” is based on Sanjay’s life with particular reference to his association with Reha Pillai.

He clarified Neil Mukesh’s role as a humble middle class boy who, for no fault of his, ends up in Jail and his lady love Mugdha Godse in no way resembling Reha Pillai or her character.
