Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the Hindustani Classical music maestro, was conferred ‘The Bharat Ratna’ yesterday.
In general this award is given personally by the President. But this time seeing the ill-health of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, a President’s emissary gave away this award at his residence in Pune.
The secretary of Union Home Ministry A F Ahmed presented the citation and the Ratna in a relatively short function (just 15 minutes), represented by the emissary, his admirers and some disciples as well as the Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Harshawardan Patil, this highest civilian honour was given to this maestro who already was conferred many other National Awards like Padma Shree in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 1985 and Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
This Karnataka based Vocalist Pandit who has joined the legends like MS Subbalakshmi and Lata Mangeshkar, thanked the President and countrymen whole-heartedly for recognizing him with this highest civilian award.
