Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner, noted film producer and director Tapan Sinha passed away, due to acute bronchopneumonia, at about 6.15 am today at Calcutta Medical Research Institute in South Kolkatta. He was 84 and was on life support system since Dec 6th.
Tapan Sinha, who started his career as a Sound Engineer in 1946 in New Theatre, Koltatta, went on to make famous films like “Uphaar”, “ Sagina Mahato”, “ Ankush”, Ek Doctor Ki Maut”, “ Kaubliwala”, “ Safed Haathi”, “ Admi Aur Aurat” and his last one being “ Anokhi Moti” in 2000.
His contribution to movie industry won him 19 National awards in different categories and ultimately the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement last year. His films have won laurels in International Film Festivals at Venice, London, Moscow, San Francisco, Ireland, Seoul and Berlin. His serving as a member of jury in the film festivals at Tashkent and San Francisco was considered a great honor to Indians.
He married a famous Bengali Actress, Arundhati Devi who passed away in 1990.
His concern for development of society and portraying the common man’s problems in a very specific heart-touching manner were always applauded by critics.
