Slumdog – An Explanation

Tapeshwar Vishwakarma of Slum dwellers joint action committee filed a case against the use of word Slumdog saying it was in the violation of human rights and honour.

Now, another body also has joined the fray. It is Jhuggi Jhonpdi Samyukta Sangharsh Samiti. Instead of going to the court, they approached Simon Beaufoy and obtained a kind of explanation on the meaning of the word that is not seen in the English dictionary.

Beaufoy appears to have given an explanation as the word gave birth when he was wandering in the slums as part of his research. He observed the domestic animals like cats and dogs sleeping in sunshine without any sign of fear. He found that though those look like sleeping, he observed them to be internally alert and watch from the corner of their eyes.

He further added that, the lead character portrayed in the movie also exhibited the instincts of the dog he observed in the slum, in such a way that he watched everything around him and learnt not by education but by experience. So, he proposed the word.

Well! The court will have its say later.
