Yesterday, as the Multiplex owners came to the discussion table, it looked like an end to the moth old stand off. They walked in with a revenue sharing proposal of 50:40:30 in the first, second and third weeks respectively and the process did not go well with the Producers and Distributors union called United Forum.

The Forum’s chairman, Mahesh Bhatt, chaired the meeting that was held at Yash Raj Studios, last evening, the 5th of May 09 to decide the fate of Rs 300 Crores worth of different films that waiting in the cans.

But, surprisingly, the multiplex owners appeared to be in no mood to accept the demands of the Forum and the same mood prevailed on the other side of the table too, thus leading the three hour meet to a deadlock.

With one understanding between them that the Forum can choose the theaters they want the movies to be released, the meeting ended since die… meaning no further dates in mind for any meeting of any sort.

So, the single theaters are now waiting to grab the chance and make the most of it. May we call it fishing in troubled waters?

The game of who winks first looks to be finally over. As the producers and distributors gear themselves up for release of their movies in single theaters and the IPL season half way through, the multiplex owners probably felt that they are fighting a losing battle.

So, there is a buzz that the multiplex owners have come out with a kind of proposal which may lead to a win- win situation.

One month of dry season appears to be enough a time for the multiplex owners to realise the strength on the other side.

Multiplex owners and producers are having a kind of stand off that the new movies are not being released now and there is no news of things getting settled between them except a few on mounting losses on the part of Multiplex owners which was stated to be around Rs 1.5L per day. Other theaters are also not able to make money due to lack of new movies from big banners. The story of showing IPL matches as well as Hollywood movies also does not look any better.

Well, this being the case there is another industry silently making money in this troubled atmosphere. It is the Home video rental companies.

In this field also Reliance did not lose its presence and has been maintaining a kind of market leadership. Their video rental company BigFlix by Anil Ambani camp, proudly claims an increase of 15% in their sales as reported recently. Other players like Seventy mm and Shemaroo Entertainment too are smiling.

The school holidays, IPL season, scorching heat and the recession riddled home budget have fueled the need for organized rental facilities and these companies have come as blessing in disguise to the students as well as housewives and elders who visit their loved ones during school holidays.
