It is now House of Commons to party with Slumdog children

There was news recently about the willingness of Slumdog Millionaire’s young artist Rubina’s father’s intentions to sell her for a sum to a Dubai based sheik. A sting operation of a tabloid exposed this.
Soon after this, there have been many offers from all around conveying their willingness to adopt her.

While this is going on one side, this aspect has attracted even the House of Commons in London. Labour MP, Keith Vaz, saw this news and immediately tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons.
The motion read “We welcome the efforts of the Indian authorities to investigate these allegations.”

Further, Vaz sent an invitation to Rubina and her co-star Azaruddin Mohammed Ismail to visit the House of Commons for a tea party and meet their fans in the UK.

A good gesture indeed! But will this fetch the starving family a decent accommodation?

It is really pleasing to hear the developments of the Slumdog Millionnaire stars. We have been hearing more of Freida’s accolades in these days. She has now been attached to two international projects involving two American directors.

Now, it is the turn of the other kid Rubina Ali who got a chance to share the screen with a Hollywood star. Though it is not a movie, it is the very consideration of her for the role in a commercial speaks volumes of the fraternity that just did not brush away the stars from the slums who played a memorable role in Slumdog Millionaire.

So, Rubina Ali will figure next to Nicole Kidman in a beverage advertisement. The shooting was recently carried out at Udaipur and the architect of the commercial was Shekhar Kapur who also roped in Arjun Rampal.

“This ad fetched more than what was paid for her for the movie” were the humble words of this little girl’s father who is now banking on the stars of her for a decent life in a better abode.

For the 9 year old Rubina Ali and 10 year old Azaruddin Mohammed Ismail, this day must be a memorable one.

Keeping in tradition that the Indians do not forget (timely) those who make the country proud, it was Sonia Gandhi who expressed her desire to encourage the young children who were part of the Oscar winning, Danny Boyle’s film, Slumdog Millionaire.

Accordingly, today, the 19th if March, these two children were led to the residence of Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath. The children who were fans of Gandhi conveyed their desire to sing the song Jai Ho for her. Incidentally this song has been selected as the campaign song of Congress.

This meeting could be lined up since the children were in Delhi to participate in the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week as flag bearers for Ashima and Leena Singh.

We have seen many movies about ABCD (America Born Confused Desis as well as America Based Confused Desis). But we never came across the plight of families living in Canada.

Canada is a place for relatively less talented or non-computer professionals who go there in search of fortune and comforts only to land in quite opposite atmosphere compared to what was promised by the agents back home.

How about a Punjabi girl with full of dreams gets into a wedlock with a Canada based groom, becomes n envy of the other girls in the town, gets a LUCKY GIRL certificate in the locality with her dream further glittering, face completely blushed. This girl with full of dreams ultimately lands in her dreamland only to get guided to a house far away from the city with seven other people already occupying each and every corner and two more part-time tenants turning out now and then. Hostile mother in law and short tempered husband add to the plight. What happens further is what Deepa Mehta is all concerned about.

This gritty director selected this subject which has already seen its success in Chicago Film Festival where the lead actress was awarded the best actress award. This also was nominated at the 29th Genie awards in Canada.

Aptly supported by B.R.Chopra in production department, Preity Zinta played a lead role perfect to the thought process of Deepa Mehta. This threesome having the past best performances to their credits make an awesome combination and their work “Videsh- Heaven on Earth” is sure to make the critics give their best when the movie hits the Indian theaters in March 27th.

South Africa now cherishes Danny Boyle’s work

Yet another milestone in Slumdog Millionaire’s success march., this time altogether in a different continent.

Yes, this movie was released in South Africa last week end and as usual, it hit instant success and became the first film to rake in a huge collection in the opening week itself.

This movie was released in 20 theaters in South Africa and the collections when counted in the weekend grossed to 1.4Mil Rands at an amazing average of 70,000/- rands per print. By these figures this movie overtook the 2004 release of Kay Pollak’s film “As it is in Heaven” which has run for more than 103 weeks in an Australian theatre.

The theatre owners in South Africa attribute this success to the large Indian Diaspora which shows keen interest in Bollywood films. The most successful Bollywood film of all time is Jodha Akbar which reportedly earned about 290,000/- rands on its opening week.

Vashu Bhagnani ropes in Slumdog children for publicity

Vashu Bhagnani tries all the best ways and means to promote his sons debut project “Kal Kissne Dekha”. While there were many such stunts already reported in the news, the recent one is his success in capitalizing the media glare the Slumdog unit achieved.

He therefore found a way to include a scene in his film involving the two children from slums of Mumbai who made it all the way to Oscars through Danny Boyle’s project Slumdog Millionaire.

A scene was conceived in which the two children Mohd Ismail and Rubina Ali were seen stuck in chaos at the airport while returning after the Oscar awards. The hero, Jackky Bhagnani ends up rescuing them from the crowd is the total sequence.

The movie whose initial release date of April 3rd could not be kept up due to ongoing tussle between the producers, distributors and the Multiplux owners is now rescheduled to May 1st. So there is enough time for the movie unit to include as many such scenes as possible. There is even a short scene by Sharukh Khan in this movie directed by Vivek Sharma.
